Promoting the use of sustainable resources is important if South Africa is to reach its energy savings targets set by the South African government, which requires renewable energy to replace 10,000 GWh of electricity by 2013. The Department of Energy estimates that 23% of this target can be met through solar water heating and Eskom is therefore actively encouraging consumers to switch to solar water heating.

A green retrofit of 30 low-income houses in Cato Manor, Durban, led by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), addresses two of the most pressing imperatives facing South Africa and other developing countries. These are creating sustainable human settlements and addressing climate change, in other words, both mitigation and adaptation.

As the supplier of 95% of South Africa’s electricity, mainly from coal, Eskom decided to ‘practice what it preaches’ by demonstrating best-practice in energy efficiency and committing to a 15% reduction in non-essential energy consumption by 2015.
