CALL FOR PAPER ABSTRACTS 2024
The Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities of Southern Africa (AMEU) Executive Council is delighted to announce a call for papers for our 2024 AMEU Convention. The 70th AMEU Convention 2024 will be hosted by Mbombela Municipality from 20 – 23 October 2024 at the Skukuza Safari Lodge.
This year’s THEME is:
Future Proofing the Municipal Electricity Utility Business in SA.
All parties interested in presenting papers or case studies at the convention should submit an abstract of no more than 200 words to the AMEU Secretariat. We welcome submissions on a variety of subtopics or sub-themes, including:
- Technologies to enable an effective and efficient evacuation, de-constraining, and de-congestion of the national electricity grid.
- Grid modernisation.
- The impact of the 3 D’s (Digitization, Decentralization and Disruption)
- Evolving sustainable business models.
- Business friendly energy supply.
- Use of ‘AI’ and Machine Learning.
- Developer contribution models.
- Innovative markets models inclusive of aggregation, energy trading, wheeling frameworks, fit-for-purpose-tariffs etc
- Balanced Just Energy Transition ‘BJET’ technologies for a stable, reliable and resilient electricity grid.
For the Best Paper Award there will be awards for the following three categories:
1. Academic Category:
Presenters/authors from tertiary academic institutions or professionals undertaking further studies at such institutions (all age groups welcome)
2. Emerging Professional Category:
Non-academic category presenters/authors up to and including 30 years of age.
3. Experienced Professional Category:
Non-academic category presenters/authors older than 30 years of age or subject matter specialists
Important Dates:
- Submission deadline: 31 May
- Paper Acceptance: 1 August
- Presenter’s Bio: 19 August
- Accepted paper submission: 2 September

Registration will take place on Sunday, 20 October 2024 from 12:00 to 14:00 in the Nombolo Mdhluli Conference Centre,
and again on Monday morning from 07:00 onwards.

- AMEU Members: R5 000
- PIESA Members: R5 000
- Non-Members: R7 500
- AMEU Honorary & Retired Members: Free
Terms and Conditions
- To get member discount you must use the email address associated with your regular AMEU account.
- If you use a new email address a new account will be opened for you, unless you ask the secretariat to update your old account details.
- Member discount is only offered to paid-up members.
- You and the billing contact of your organisation will receive invoices a few minutes after you have registered.
- If you see a red notice on the screen about unpaid invoices please contact the secretariat on ameuservices@vdw.co.za to resolve.
- Should you wish to cancel your registration altogether, please do so in writing to mpho@vdw.co.za by no later than 11 Oct 2024. Any cancellations not made or if the delegate is a NO-SHOW at the convention the FULL registration fee will be payable.

The Awards Gala Dinner will be held in the convention venue, Nombolo Mdhuli Conference Centre Hall on Tuesday, 22 October 2024. The theme is TBA.
